Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new limited-edition model of its iconic G-Class SUV. This special version honors the original G-Class series, the W460, particularly the 280 GE — the model that laid the foundation for the legendary “Geländewagen.”
The edition is uniquely named “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s.” While unusual for Mercedes-Benz, the name reflects the vehicle’s strong nod to vintage styling. The SUV features retro design elements both inside and out, along with new paint options and extra features.
Compared to the standard modern G-Class, this special edition includes several classic touches. At the front, it sports a traditional Mercedes-Benz emblem on the bonnet, protective cages around the headlights, a blacked-out grille and front bumper, and orange indicator lenses replacing the usual clear or darkened lights.
The exterior design enhances the retro, rugged look further. It comes standard with a large roof rack and rear ladder, a soft cover for the tailgate-mounted spare tire branded with classic Mercedes lettering, and a ‘Schöckl Proved’ badge on the B-pillar. The wheels are new five-spoke 18-inch silver alloys inspired by the W460 model. Mud flaps complete the off-road-ready appearance.
Customers can choose from two authentic paint colors reminiscent of the 1980s: Agave Green Solid or Colorado Beige Solid. Both colors feature black finishes on the grille, wheel arches, and mirrors, combined with the retro five-spoke silver wheels adorned with the Mercedes star.
Inside, the cabin keeps much of the modern G-Class’s layout, including dual 12.3-inch screens, a sunroof, and a Burmester 3D surround sound system. Retro details appear in the fabric trim on the center console, echoing 1980s upholstery, and the passenger grab handle bears the “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s” lettering.
Mercedes-Benz plans to produce only 460 units worldwide of this edition. It will be offered with two engine choices: the diesel G 450 d and the gasoline G 500.
Both engines are mild-hybrid straight-six units paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The 2.9-liter turbo-diesel in the G 450 d produces 367 horsepower and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. The 3.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine in the G 500 delivers 449 horsepower and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque.
Performance-wise, the G 500 petrol is slightly quicker, reaching 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds, while the diesel G 450 d takes 5.8 seconds. Both variants have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).
Some have questioned why Mercedes did not offer this special edition with the high-performance V8 AMG engine.
The starting price in Europe is €160,055. Pricing and availability for North America have not been officially announced but could start slightly above US $180,000 based on likely import costs. Deliveries are expected to begin later in 2025.
What sets this limited edition apart is its clear focus on the G-Class’s original ruggedness and heritage rather than flashy design. The use of modest 18-inch wheels and practical mud flaps, instead of oversized wheels and low-profile tires often seen on luxury SUVs today, highlights this. The STRONGER THAN THE 1980s edition brings the G-Class back to its off-road roots—a welcome reminder amid many high-performance models that rarely leave the pavement.
