Mercedes’ Cheapest SUV: Stylish but More Expensive Than Rivals

by Grace

If you want a luxury car that doesn’t cost too much, brands like Cadillac, Genesis, and Acura might come to mind first. Mercedes-Benz is usually not seen as affordable. However, in 2025, you can buy a new Mercedes that is somewhat within reach. It won’t match the luxury and performance of pricier Mercedes models, but you do get the prestige of the famous three-pointed star on your car’s front.

Let’s take a closer look at the cheapest Mercedes currently available.

More Expensive Than Its Main Competitors

The cheapest BMW you can get is a four-door coupe called the 228 Gran Coupe. For Mercedes, the cheapest option is a small SUV, the GLA-Class 250. It starts at $43,000 for the front-wheel-drive base model.

Even though it is the cheapest Mercedes, the GLA 250 is more expensive than similar rivals. For example, the BMW X1 starts at $41,350 and the Audi Q3 at $39,800. This shows a common pattern: Mercedes models usually cost more than comparable BMWs and Audis.

But does the GLA 250 offer enough value to justify the higher price? Let’s find out.

Size and Style Show Its Entry-Level Status

The GLA 250 is the smallest Mercedes SUV. It measures only 173.6 inches long and 72.2 inches wide (not counting mirrors). Despite its size, it doesn’t look cheap. The design features smooth, rounded shapes with a bold grille that carries the Mercedes emblem, giving it a strong presence.

The base GLA 250 comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, aluminum roof rails, rear privacy glass, a power liftgate, hands-free access, and LED lights all around. You can also add the AMG Night Package for glossy black trim and bigger wheels. There is also an optional panoramic roof.

The color choices are limited, with only six options. Aside from the bright Patagonia Red, most colors are neutral like white, grey, or black.

Interior Improvements and Features

Compared to the older GLA model, this one has more space, especially in the back seat where there is nearly five more inches of legroom. The cabin looks and feels nicer too. Mercedes used design elements from their more expensive models, like rounded air vents and a dual-screen display setup, along with quality materials and colors.

Standard features include:

−Power-adjustable front seats with memory

−MB Tex leatherette upholstery

−Dual-zone automatic climate control

−Two 10.25-inch screens (one for the driver and one touchscreen center console)

−Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Heated front seats cost an extra $500, which feels a bit unfair since the cheaper BMW X1 includes them at no extra cost. Adaptive cruise control is another $600 add-on. This feature is standard on much cheaper cars like the Honda Civic.

When you add options, the GLA 250’s price can climb close to $50,000. At that point, it starts competing with larger and more practical SUVs.

Performance: Adequate but Not Exciting

The GLA 250 is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine paired with a mild hybrid system. It produces 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive comes standard, and the transmission is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.8 seconds (6.6 seconds with all-wheel drive). The GLA 250 is quick enough for highway driving and passing other cars. However, it is not a sporty SUV. The ride is comfortable and the handling is decent, but road noise is more noticeable compared to larger Mercedes SUVs like the GLC or GLE.

The BMW X1, which costs less, offers better driving dynamics and more power.

Other Affordable Mercedes Options

If you can spend a bit more than the GLA, Mercedes offers other choices:

CLA-Class ($44,400): A stylish four-door coupe with a sloping roofline. It uses the same engine as the GLA but feels more fun to drive. However, it has less space and is less practical, making it better suited for singles or couples.

GLB-Class: This is a practical three-row SUV with a small third seat. It is more versatile than the GLA but less sporty. Its performance is slightly lower, but it offers more room.

Final Thoughts: The GLA Is a Good Entry-Level Mercedes, but Rivals Offer More

The GLA 250 does not disappoint as the cheapest Mercedes-Benz. It looks good, is well-built, and drives fine. It doesn’t feel basic, which is important for buyers starting their luxury car journey.

However, outside the Mercedes brand, the GLA faces strong competition. It costs more than most rivals and quickly becomes pricey when options are added. If you are not loyal to Mercedes, it makes sense to compare other brands before buying.
