Audi Q5 E-Hybrid Drives 62 Miles on Electric Power, From £56k

by Grace

Audi has launched the new Q5 e-hybrid PHEV, available in both SUV and Sportback styles. It features a 295bhp powertrain and can travel up to 62 miles on pure electric power.

The vehicle now uses a larger rear battery, which is 45% bigger than before, with a capacity of 20.7kWh. Audi has adopted a new ‘cell-to-pack’ design. This means the battery cells are glued directly to the battery housing, instead of being placed inside separate modules. This change allows more power to fit into a smaller space, making the battery more efficient.

The battery supports charging at up to 11kW using a three-phase AC charger. A full charge takes about two and a half hours. However, not many homes have access to three-phase power.

Under the hood, the Q5 uses a 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine that produces 248bhp. Combined with the electric motor, the total torque reaches 332 lb-ft. The car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds. When running on electric power only, it can reach a top speed of 87 mph. With the engine engaged, the top speed increases to 155 mph.

Key features include sports suspension, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and Audi’s well-known Quattro all-wheel drive system. The hybrid also boasts improved regenerative braking. Audi has increased its energy recovery to a maximum of 88kW. Drivers can adjust the level of regeneration using paddles on the steering wheel.

Inside, the Q5 offers a well-equipped cabin. It comes standard with a 14.5-inch central touchscreen and an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit, similar to the mild hybrid models. There is also an optional 10.9-inch display for the front passenger. A vented wireless phone charger delivers up to 15 watts of power. Four USB-C ports are available for front and rear passengers.

The rear seat can tilt and slide to increase boot space slightly. The SUV offers 438 litres of storage, while the Sportback has 433 litres. Folding the rear seats down expands the space to 1,358 litres in the SUV and 1,300 litres in the Sportback.

Prices start at £56,740 for the SUV. The Sportback costs an additional £2,500. Deliveries are expected to begin this September.
