This Shelby Mustang 1000 Will Test Your Car Insurance Limits: Rare, Powerful, and Priceless

by Grace

Shelby’s Mustang GT500 and Super Snake are legendary, but in 2012, they took it a step further with the release of the Mustang 1000. This model was an even more extreme version of the iconic pony car, offering a serious boost in power. Known simply as the “1000,” it could be added to the existing GT500 and Super Snake models, and it completely transformed them into high-performance monsters.

The Shelby 1000 was a game-changer, setting new standards for Mustang enthusiasts. At the time, it was the most powerful Mustang ever made, and its performance was head and shoulders above the competition. Under the hood, the 5.4-liter V8 engine received a massive 3.6-liter Kenne Bell supercharger. Shelby also upgraded the engine with new injectors, a stronger fuel system, forged internals, and ported heads.

The result was a road-going Mustang that produced a jaw-dropping 950 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. This was more than enough to turn heads at any car meet. For those brave enough to push the limits, a track version of the car produced an astonishing 1,100 horsepower. It was rumored that the Shelby 1000 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds.

Only about 20 Shelby 1000s were ever built, making them an extremely rare sight on the used car market. However, Mecum Auctions has managed to secure one, and it’s set to be sold next month.

This particular Shelby 1000 was custom-built for renowned jeweler David Yurman, and it has only been driven 973 miles (1,565 km). If you’re a fan of older Mustangs with incredible horsepower, this could be your chance to own a piece of history.

Beyond the engine, Shelby made several modifications to ensure the Mustang could handle its immense power. These upgrades included a new 9-inch rear end, six-piston front calipers, four-piston rear calipers, and a reinforced driveshaft. The suspension was also upgraded with stiffer springs, sway bars, and bushings. A lightweight carbon fiber hood with functional air vents was added to help keep the engine bay cool.

What makes this particular Shelby 1000 even more desirable is the fact that it was the last model designed under the supervision of Carroll Shelby before his passing in May 2012. This, combined with the car’s supercar-like performance and rarity, makes it a collector’s dream.

When it was first released, the Shelby 1000 had an MSRP of $200,000, which included the base GT500 Mustang. Back then, it was priced like a supercar—and even today, that price still reflects its exclusivity.

If you’ve got the money and are looking for a truly rare, high-performance car, you might want to check out Mecum Auctions’ upcoming sale. But be prepared to pay a premium—it’s not going to be cheap.
