PETALING JAYA, June 14 — Mercedes-Benz has officially introduced its all-electric G-Class to Malaysia, marking the model’s first appearance in the country. The launch is timed with Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Kuala Lumpur (MBFWKL) 2025.
The G-Class EV is on display at The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur from June 13 to June 15. Its arrival follows the local debut of the petrol-powered Mercedes-AMG G63, which was launched in Malaysia last November.
New Name, Classic Style
This electric SUV is officially known as the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. Although Mercedes has dropped the “EQ” branding from its electric models, this naming still highlights its EV capabilities. For simplicity, many just refer to it as the G-Class EV.
Despite being fully electric, the new model maintains the iconic boxy design of the G-Class series. However, some changes make it easy to distinguish from its petrol siblings. These include a redesigned front grille with a glowing LED outline and the absence of the usual circular rear tire case. Instead, there is a square storage box that can hold charging cables and tools.
Exclusive EV Features
The G-Class EV comes with features not found in the petrol versions. One of the most unique is the G-Turn, also known as a “tank turn.” This function lets the SUV spin 720 degrees on its own axis—an impressive maneuverability feature.
It also offers a deeper wading depth of 850mm, which is 150mm more than the petrol model. Other additions include G-Steering and an Intelligent Offroad Crawl system, enhancing its off-road capabilities.
Powerful Performance Specs
Under the hood, the electric G-Class uses four electric motors, delivering a total output of 432kW (579 horsepower) and a massive 1,164Nm of torque. It’s powered by a 116kWh lithium-ion battery, giving it a WLTP-rated range of up to 473km on a single charge.
For charging, the SUV supports 11kW AC charging and up to 200kW DC fast charging. Using a regular AC charger, it takes about 12 hours to charge from 10% to full. With a DC fast charger, it can reach 80% in just 32 minutes.
No Malaysian Pricing Yet
At the time of writing, official Malaysian specifications and pricing for the G-Class EV have not been announced. However, considering its premium build and performance, the new EV is expected to be priced below the Mercedes-AMG G63, which currently retails at around RM1.9 million in Malaysia.
