Australia’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution is picking up speed — and it’s bringing back the beloved motor show.
The Melbourne International EV AutoShow is returning for its third year, running from Friday, June 27 to Sunday, June 29 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Organised by Future Drive AutoShows, the event highlights just how quickly the EV market is transforming.
Just a few years ago, only four electric vehicle brands were available in Australia. Today, there are 100 models on the market, with 60 more expected in 2026, said Ray Evans, CEO of Future Drive AutoShows.
“The market has opened up dramatically,” Evans said. “You can see it in the brands — many of them completely new to Australians.”
Chinese Brands Lead the Charge
One of the most noticeable changes has been the surge of Chinese EV makers into Australia. Brands like Deepal, Geely, Skywell, Smart, XPeng, and Zeekr are now selling electric vehicles alongside more familiar names such as BYD, MG, Chery, and GWM.
Even within these companies, new sub-brands are emerging. For example, BYD’s luxury line Denza is set to introduce plug-in 4WDs and high-end models.
Growing Corporate and Government Interest
Evans said it’s not just individuals showing interest. Businesses and government agencies are investing in EVs in large numbers. Mining company Fortescue, for instance, plans to buy 1,500 electric vehicles and is spending $100 million on its EV transition.
“The genie is out of the bottle,” Evans said. “It’s not going back in. ICE [internal combustion engine] vehicles won’t last forever.”
AutoShow to Showcase Latest EVs and Tech
The EV AutoShow will feature a wide range of electric models including the XPeng G6, Audi Q4 and Q6 e-tron, Smart #1 and #3, Leapmotor C10, Kia EV3, and Polestar 4.
The XPeng P7+ sedan and the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Spectre will make their first appearance in Australia at the show.
In addition to vehicles, the show will also feature charging infrastructure companies, offering advice on home charging and vehicle-to-grid systems.
CarsGuide will be present, hosting expert panels and answering consumer questions throughout the event.

Future Drive is also holding a raffle for an XPeng G6, with proceeds supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The winner will be announced on Sunday, June 29.
