Consumer Watchdog Reveals Spain’s Top Car Insurance Companies

by Grace

Not all car insurance policies in Spain are equal. A new report from the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU), Spain’s consumer watchdog, highlights which insurers are leading the pack—and which are falling behind.

How the rankings are decided

The OCU regularly surveys its members about their satisfaction with car insurance companies. Although the survey is not a full national sample, thousands of responses provide valuable insight into which insurers earn drivers’ trust and loyalty.

In 2024, 63% of those surveyed held comprehensive insurance (todo riesgo), while 37% chose third-party coverage (a terceros). The top five insurers in customer satisfaction are:

Seguros Bilbao (now Occident) – Scored 82 out of 100

Known for fast claims, quick repairs, and smooth payouts. It is a clear favorite among drivers.

A.M.A. – Scored 78 out of 100

This mutual insurer, popular among healthcare professionals, is praised for reliable service and support.

Mutua Madrileña – Scored 76 out of 100

A Madrid-based insurer with high customer loyalty—92% of its clients stay with the company.

SegurCaixa Adeslas – Scored 75 out of 100

Known for steady service and strong support, even in remote areas.

RACC – Scored 74 out of 100

The Catalan insurer is well-regarded for customer care, including perks like penalty appeals and parking benefits.

Does top rating mean best value?

Not necessarily. The OCU warns that only about half of its members report being truly satisfied with their coverage. Many customers remain with their insurer due to inertia or reluctance to switch, not because they are completely happy.

What to look for in car insurance

Choosing the best policy depends on your needs and understanding the fine print. Here are three important factors to consider in Spain:

Franquicia (excess) – This is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket when you make a claim. Some insurers allow you to choose the excess, while others include hidden fees.

Payout limits – Even comprehensive policies may limit coverage on things like legal defense or medical costs. Check what your policy actually covers.

Extras – Benefits such as free vehicle inspections (ITV), legal assistance, pet coverage, or guaranteed roadside assistance can make a difference.

Final thoughts

All the insurers in the OCU’s top five offer solid features, good perks, and customer satisfaction. However, the survey reflects the opinions of about 13,000 users in a country with over 30 million insured drivers.

Before committing to a new policy, take time to compare options. Whether you drive daily in the city, cruise through rural areas, or have had a few parking mishaps, your insurance should fit your lifestyle—not slow you down.
