BMW’s latest entry-level model, the 118 hatchback, brings a refined design, more tech, and a sporty driving feel. Launched in December with a starting price of $56,500 plus on-road costs, the small five-door German hatchback is built for urban drivers who still want that BMW experience.
Under the hood, the 118 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. It now offers a slight increase in both power and torque. The engine sends power to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A dedicated Sport mode and manual shift paddles add to the engaging drive.
BMW has slightly reshaped the hatch, now 41mm longer and 25mm taller than the previous version, though most dimensions remain the same. The result is slightly more rear legroom, although the back seats still feel tight—typical for small BMWs.
Inside, the 118 has a high-quality, premium feel. The cabin features well-structured seats and a sporty design, true to BMW tradition. Materials are modern and well-finished, and the dashboard is clean and contemporary. A head-up display is a welcome addition for drivers. However, the 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system can be overwhelming due to its many functions. The low-positioned air vents also seem like an afterthought in the design.
BMW has added more standard features to the 118. The safety and driver-assist package is comprehensive. It includes a 360-degree camera system, parking sensors at both ends, parking assist, and a reversing assistant. The hatchback also features wireless phone charging, and two USB ports for both front and rear passengers.
The 118 comes with BMW’s five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, aligning with customer expectations for reliability and peace of mind.
Overall, the new BMW 118 hatchback blends sporty character with high-end tech in a small but stylish package. It’s designed for drivers who want premium features without stepping into larger, more expensive models.
